The major revisions to Scout Leader training, featuring a more modular "Training Continuum", which took effect in 2001 have resulted in the training requirements for leaders to wear the "Trained" patch being different, the same materials are covered in a different format and combinations of courses. All Scout Leaders attend the New Leader Essentials course which is, in effect, an "Introduction to Boy Scouting", this course presents the aims, purposes and methods of the BSA and how Units work. A volunteer then takes the "Job Specific" course for their currently registered position. Then, for some volunteers, the Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills finishes off the training. (See below) If a volunteer was fully trained for their current position before the change in the training format they are still fully trained until a change in position occurs, then the volunteer would need to attend the new training. The final step in training is to attend WOOD BADGE.
These changes, which affect Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders and Venturing Leaders, are summarized below:
Cub Scout Leaders For a Cub Scout Leader to be considered Trained, the new requirements are as follows:
New Leader Cub Scout Leader Essentials Specific
All positions x x Tiger Cub Den Leaders (session for the Cub Scout Den Leader and Assistants appropriate position) Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants Cubmasters and Assistants Committee Chairs and Assistants
They are then Trained for that position only. The same applies to leaders who've previously completed the corresponding Cub Scout Leader Basic Training breakout (just as it theoretically did previously) Note that leaders changing position are required to complete the appropriate Specific session for their new position in order to retain their Trained status, helping them to provide a quality program in their new role. Also, existing Tiger Cub Coaches are not Trained as Tiger Cub Den Leaders until they have completed the Tiger Cub Den Leader Specific session.
Boy Scout Leader Training: To be considered Trained, the requirements are now as follows:
New Leader Scoutmaster Troop Committee Outdoor Essentials Specific Challenge Leadership Skills
Scoutmasters & x x x Assistants Committee Chairmen x x & Members
Note that the "program leaders" (Scoutmasters and Assistants) now need to complete Outdoor Leadership Skills to be Trained. This course has in effect replaced Scoutmaster Fundamentals III. It is also now a stand alone course, this can help with scheduling conflicts.
Varsity Team Coaches To be considered Trained, the requirements are now as follows:
New Leader Varsity Coach Troop Committee Outdoor Essentials Specific Challenge Leadership Skills
Coaches & x x x Assistants Committee Chairmen x x & Members
Note that the "program leaders" (Scoutmasters and Assistants) now need to complete Outdoor Leadership Skills to be Trained. This course has in effect replaced Scoutmaster Fundamentals III. It is also now a stand alone course, this can help with scheduling conflicts.
Venturing Leaders For a Venturing Adult Leader to be considered Trained, the new requirements are as follows:
New Leader Venturing Adult Essentials Leader Specific Advisors x x Committee Chairs and Members x x
They are then trained as Venturing adult leaders, regardless of their position in the Crew. Retraining is not required when changing positions. While not required , completion of Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills Course is recommended.
It is helpful for Venturing Volunteers, who do not have previous experience as a Unit Volunteer, to consider attending a session of the Troop Committee Challenge to get information on how a Unit Committee works together with the Advisor & Associate Advisors of the Crew.
