Basic Leader Training is designed for maximum flexibility. The sessions can be delivered over time--training on one or more evenings a week or month--or in a one-day training event that incorporates all program areas. It is suitable for large or small groups and may be presented to leaders of one or more units each time. Each council and district may decide the appropriate delivery method, keeping in mind that the focus is to remove roadblocks and achieve 100 percent trained leaders.
NEW LEADER ESSENTIALS New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers--Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders--take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.
LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants.
CUB SCOUT LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and pack committee members can complete this training in one day or two or three evenings. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials and the Leader Specific training for that position.
BOY SCOUT LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING For Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. The fourth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half, depending on the skill level of the new leader. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained.
VENTURING LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING Developed for Venturing Advisors, assistant Advisors, and crew committee members, this training incorporates Venturing's current adult leader training. New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered to be trained.
INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences. The course is a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by demonstrating mastery of a specific skill. The emphasis is on the skill, rather than on attending the course.
CHARTER ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVE (COR) TRAINING. The Boy Scouts of America, in its relationship with chartered organizations, depends on the COR to be the liaison between the local council and the organization. As the representative of the organization, you have the responsibility to share information between the council and the organization and vice versa. In fact, you are a voting member of the district and council. Charter Organization Representative Training will educate you and prepare and enable you to serve in this important role effectively.
OTHER OUTDOOR COURSES
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) The essential outdoor training course for all Cub Scout Leaders. This course is required for all Packs that want to engage in outdoor activities. By completing this training course the participants will: 1. Understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA program: 2. Acquire the skills and confidence necessary to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity: 3. Increase their knowledge of the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity. BALOO sessions include the why and how of Cub Scout camping--planning, equipment, meal preparation, and campfire programs. Also included, Cub Scouters rotate among four round-robin sessions--fire safety, stoves, and lanterns; first aid and sanitation; nature hikes and games; and cooking. Scattered throughout the day are plenty of the four S's: songs, stunts, stories, and showmanship. With proper planning and your BALOO-trained leader, your pack should be set for a fun and exciting weekend event.
Webelos Leader Outdoor Training (OWL) This course is for all adults connected with the cub scout program: Webelos leaders, assistant Webelos leaders, future Webelos leaders, parent of cub or Webelos scout, Cubmaster, committee members, den leaders. OWL Training presents "how to" in planning and conducting successful Webelos Den parent and son overnight campouts and other Webelos outdoor activities. It reinforces -- but does not duplicate -- what you learned at Cub Scout Leader Basic Training. This course provides "hands-on" learning experience in camping and outdoor skills as done by Webelos Dens. This is a two day course including practicing what you've learned by camping overnight and putting to use some of the new skills you learn. OWL Training is your opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade in teaching fourth and fifth grade boys the outdoor skills offered in the Webelos program. You will discover interesting methods for teaching the outdoorsman, geologist, naturalist and forester activities badges as well as how and where to take your boys camping.
ADVANCED TRAINING
WOOD BADGE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Wood Badge has evolved into the core leadership skills training course for the BSA. The new Wood Badge course focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults and is less focused on outdoor skills, which are more effectively addressed in other courses.
